Libby’s Southern Comfort brings a twist of Southern Cooking to Northern Kentucky

I recently had the opportunity to stop in and check out Libby’s Southern Comfort in Covington, KY.  Libby’s Southern Comfort is Covington’s newest restaurant located in the revitalized Madison Ave and Washington Street corridor at the corner of W. 8th St. and Washington.

Opened in January 2019 by Brad Wainscott, Libby’s Southern Comfort has received rave reviews about their mouth-watering southern food served in a laid back rustic environment. If you are from Northern Kentucky, then you know the “Wainscott” name is synonymous with fried chicken thanks to Brad’s father Butch Wainscott, who opened the Greyhound Tavern, Tousey House in Northern Kentucky which are known for their fried chicken and southern staples.

“This is not my father’s fried chicken”

~ Brad Wainscott

This Wainscott iteration is a departure from the traditional establishments opened by Brad’s father. Brad wanted to make a fresh start in more than one way with Libby’s Southern Comfort. After working many years in the family restaurant business Brad wanted to establish his own name and his own unique food selections, but also a fresh start in life. Brad shared that he had issues with substance abuse in the past. After receiving treatment and recieving support from family and friends, Brad is proud to say he has been sober for over a year. In a way of giving back, Brad helps those who have fought to be sober by providing jobs at Libby’s for those who need a second chance. “There are not a lot of places out there that will help those who have had trouble in the past,” Brad stated.

Simple, just like the South. Libby’s is laid back enough so you can stop in right after work or make dinner plans for you and your significant other. There is no dress code here, come by and grab a bite to eat and enjoy your favorite drink while having a friendly conversation with other patrons.

Libby’s offers up some delicious southern staples as well as some unique items. Nothing says southern food like fried chicken, so make sure to try some. Brad did emphasize that “this is not my father’s fried chicken”, this is his own recipe made especially for Libby’s. Other items on the menu are Goetta Hush Puppies, which were the idea of his wife Michelle, Fried Green Tomatoes, Oysters on da’ half shell, and a Charlie Brown, which is a traditional Kentucky Hot Brown named after Brad and Michelle’s son Charlie.
